The God of Small Things

This is undoubtedly one of my favorite books. I have actually read it twice now. Though I don't really think I understood it the first time (I was in the 8th I think). This time around, I took my time, paused, re-read the good parts, underlined my fav. sections. Smiled, cried, laughed. It was special.

I am deeply drawn towards stories which are at a tangent to the typical. Love stories that do not follow the rules laid down by the world. Where those involved are pushed apart by everything and still manage to come together.

The God of Small Things is exactly that. I don't know about other books written by Arundhati Roy but this one is surely a reader's delight.

As described at the back, the book is about "the tragic fate of a family which tampered with the laws that lay down who should be loved and how." And it is as simple and as complex as that.

Here are a few lines I loved from the book and these sum up the book for me:

"Her own grief grieved her. His devastated her."

"It is curious how sometimes the memory of death lives on for so much longer than the memory of the life that it purloined."

"She drifted into marriage like a passenger drifts towards an unoccupied chair in an airport lounge."

"...choosing between her husband's name and her father's name didn't give a woman much of a choice."

"..new teeth were waiting inside her gums, like words in a pen."

"Smells like music, hold memories. She breathed deep, and bottled it up for posterity."

"That's what careless words do. They make people love you a little less."

"Somethings come with their own punishments. Like bedrooms with built-in cupboards."

"Man's subliminal urge to destroy what he could neither subdue nor deify."

"Once again they broke the Love Laws. That lay down who should be loved. And how. And how much."

The book was a wonderful journey into the lives of the two twins and their twisted tales. The backward reading. The silly games. The strange, yet not so strange, deep connection. The author weaves magical words around their eventful but tragic life. Ah those words. Her analogies are so realistic, you can understand at once what the character feels. The effortless way in which she goes about describing mundane things is what takes this book from normal to extraordinary.

I could re-read it. Again and again. I am sure I will find more parts to underline every time. I could not quote many parts, had to choose the best. But there are so many more to discover. Read it to know for yourself.

The Blair Witch Project

I bought the DVD for this movie months ago. I was waiting to watch it with S, but something or the other kept getting in the way. Then, day before yesterday, he just happened to drop in and we decided to see the movie.

Well, I heard the movie was the scariest ever and all that. So I was expecting to be really scared outta my wits, but nothing like that happened.

The movie is supposedly a true story. These 3 students went into this forest to make a documentary and never returned. A year later their footage was found and this is it. There are two cameras, one which they use to shoot the documentary and the other which they use to shoot their entire trip. It is quite spooky at times. Especially coz one of the cameras is in B/W.It gives an eerie touch to the entire film.

The only thing that really scares you is knowing that all that they show actually happened. There isnt any gore. Just strange occurrences. This one time, there are there voodoo structures made from sticks just hanging from the trees everywhere. Very spooky. And then when they find piles of rocks outside their tent. Weird stuff happens. But thats it. It isnt as scary as I had thought it wud be, which is why maybe I dint enjoy it too much.

Its a hugely talked about movie, so see it if you are inclined to. Very o-k-a-y.

Raajneeti

What a horrible waste of time.

S had warned me that it would be terrible but somehow I thought it might just be good.
But oh was I in for a bad surprise.
I went along with Dad. The theater was pretty empty. And then the torture began.

Its a hotch-potch of a story. Totally confused direction. It is basically about a family of politicians and their fight for power. Mama, chacha, bhanja, dewar all bloody mixed in a khichdi. Noone has even acted well. Such a huge starcast but everyone failed.

WTF moment - All the bloody women in the movie get pregnant the very first time they do it. Gosh, super fertility I must say.
WTF moment 2 - What the hell was Shruti Seth thinking whne she took up that role ? It does not suit her one bit. She looked totally out of place.
WTF moment 3 - Which movie was being copied btw ? Was it the godfather or the Mahabharat or what ? Such a fine blend, what a masterful director.

A utter waste I mus say. Thank god I did not pay too much for the tickets.

Did you hear about the Morgans ?

This movie was lying in my folder for eras. I kept putting off watching it coz I heard it was boring and not worth it. Finally yesterday, I decided I must watch it and make place.

The flick is about this separated couple (separated b'coz he slept with someone else) who witness a crime together and are sent away on a witness protection program. He still wants to get back together and they spend a lot of time together on this forced vacation and realize they still love each other. They decide to come back and adopt a child too and all ends well.

The funny has its laughs. Some moments are really hilarious. I pretty much enjoyed the movie, quite unexpectedly. And of course, it has Hugh Grant. What more does a girl need. That accent of his is like honey being poured into my ears. And someone was saying he aged ? Bah !

Watch it on a day off. It's a good fun flick.

Blissful Mondays - 7

Last week was really great. I got so many things done. I have started drawing everyday. I am reading a lot more.  I finally finished lost (must write a post on that) I saw a few movies. Enjoyed the world cup thoroughly, even though my favorite team - Argentina lost in the quarterfinals. I will miss watching them play, especially Messi.

I spend a nice weekend with S. We enjoyed the matches together. We went to the University for tea one evening. Bluffed our way in, coz they weren't allowing anyone without an i-card to get in. Had really nice snacks there. Talked a lot. Good fun.

I made a yummy cheese cake. It turned out pretty well, for my first attempt. Will try it again soon. I also made yummy iced green tea, which I took to work. I also had a good time at work as I described in the post before.

All in all, it was a good simple and fulfilling week.

Leaving you with this cute picture from here.

My Parisian Dream

So I have undertaken a new project.
A blog dedicated purely to everything Paris.

I have been in love with Paris since god knows when. I am learning French - tutoring myself, getting ready for my much-desired trip one day. I love looking at pictures of Paris and instead of just looking at them, I thought I might as well collect them in one place.
It is one beautiful city, full of art and culture, ready to be soaked up. My arms are open and so is my mind. I'm ready to soak it all up.

Most of the photos are of the Eiffel Tower, one structure which by itself defines what Paris is all about. I have also included links I found - day trips, must-dos; my experiences and stories etc. I will be including songs that talk about Paris, books and even movies maybe.

Just started today and I am having SO much fun. It will help me later when I actually go there as I will have all the right information handy. So cheers to my dream. One step at a time towards the destination.

This moment - 5

It was so easy to chose the moment of this week. It was very much the day my boss handed me my quarterly goals and appreciated all the work I have done. She told me how my mind works just like hers ( a big big biggg compliment that is ) and how very much like her, I know so much about many topics. How she can always count on me whenever she asks a question. How she sees me becoming a manager in the next few years. Etc. etc. etc. I was totally delighted. Elated. On seventh heaven - cloud nine. You get it. She then handed these spoon shaped chocolates to me. What a nice gesture.

Then she went on to give me some personal goals. What I need to overcome in order to strengthen my leadership skills. I love listening to what she has to say. She knows so much. She is undoubtedly my idol. I look up to her with an awestruck look on my face. Oh, what would I have done without her. Really ! Thanks so much D !

Another one

I am quite happy with this one. It came out pretty well. Proportion was pretty right. Thank god I'm getting somewhere.

What do you think ??
