The Breadwinner

I picked this one up from 'Crossword' a few weeks back, during one of my impulsive-have-to-buy-something moods !

After reading The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, I have always been drawn towards any writing about Afghanistan. I also love picking up books by new authors. I like to give everyone a chance.

So this one, very short (and fit in my budget) seemed perfect for an after-dinner read. Even though it was written by an American, I thought, ''what the heck, let me try it out!''

It started off slowly, and picked up pace slightly around the middle, but overall, was an average attempt. It is the usual story of how one girl is affected by the Taliban taking over Kabul. How her family is beaten and her father arrested without reason, How she has to dress like a boy to earn for her family, etc. But it ended abruptly. As if there was to be a sequel*. Maybe there is, will have to find that out. I did see two more books by the author when I bought this one.

Anyways, decent book. I wouldn't recommend it though. There are better books out there, and so little time.

*Added: Yes, the book does have a sequel. Actually, its the first one of the trilogy. Now I'm in a fix. I didn't like the book too much, but I do wanna find out how it ended ! Hmmm.. lemme see if I should go grab the other two !
