The Red Tent

As I begin to write this, I suddenly feel that I have read so many books this year. I am quite proud of myself. I know the list isn't as long as I'd like it to be, but it's a start !

So this one was called The Red Tent. I picked it up from my dear Boss, who is now leaving :(. A very interesting narrative and a different read ! I thought it to be an odd book at first, all about mythology...but I began to like it after the first few chapters. It intrigued me. It was about something I had no prior knowledge about, Jewish mythology. Jacob, Joseph and of, course the main character - Dinah.

The story is narrated by Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob. She starts long before her birth, describing her grandparents, parents, aunts etc. The name "red tent" comes from the ancient ritual, where all menstruating women spend their time secluded in a tent. The book talks in great detail about matters of a woman. It tells you how some clans worshiped the coming-of-age while others couldn't care less. It talks about Egyptian Pharaohs, sheep rearing, slavery and so many different things. Things that I hadn't heard of before. Which is why I found it quite fascinating.

It took me a long while to finish the book, mostly coz I only read it at work :P he he ! Let this be our secret !

More about Dinah here.
